The first person in my mother’s family to get a home movie camera was one of her uncles. He used it to capture long, unfocused sequences of his shoes, his secretaries, weddings, birthday parties and other important people and events, all without benefit of framing or composition.
It drove my grandfather, who was an excellent photographer and who used his home movie camera to much better effect a few years later, completely insane.
As I watch the short film I shot at the beer festival in Camden on Wednesday night, all I can think is, “My grandfather would be so ashamed.” (And yet, how else can I illustrate the sheer weight of all that beer?)
